2021 Race Season in Review - Part Four

A look back on a year returning to racing and the privilege

that comes with sharing in the passion of bikes

SBT GRVL

My next race would take me out west to Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Joining me for this trip was my wonderful partner, and fellow team member, Sarah. We drove out to Colorado and she was amazing in supporting me, and even better, supporting the race. She volunteered to work at the aid stations. Handing out snacks and water at aid stations at mile 70 and 93/117 (the course looped back), she got a chance to see some funny stuff as riders got dirtier and more haggard throughout the day. An amazing perspective on the race.

Part Three: Dirty Kitten

Dirty Kitten Gravel Race would mark my first return to a race I did previously. In 2019, I came to Dirty Kitten bright-eyed and bushy tailed and left bruised, battered, and beaten…..

It's a great twenty mile course, all private roads, all dirt, not a lick of pavement on the day. Some nice hardpack gravel, some gravel/dirt double track, a touch of chunky stuff, some loose fresh gravel now and then, and some sandy slippy bits here and there. Two hills on course, the first early one hits a pretty steep slope, but doesn't last too long. The second hill starts with a moderate long stretch, levels out to rolling, then you hit The Kitten Crusher……

Part Two: G.R.U.S.K.

I want to take you back to a wonderful day I had for the Gravel Race Up Spruce Knob, aka G.R.U.S.K., eighty miles of West Virginia gravel and mountains. The race starts by the titular Spruce Knob at the Experience Learning center. I arrived after dark the night before, so it wasn’t until morning that I got to see the wonderful view we had from the start line…

Part One: Sweetwater Whiskey Rebellion

I ride bikes.

My chosen discipline is the road race, whether paved, dirt, or gravel. I’ll be the first to admit that this a strange sport; long, arduous roads climbing up over mountains for so long I feel I’ve entered some surrealist unending up, an eternity of up; only to go plummeting down the other side, speeding around twists and turns, at once thrilled and frightened, controlling my own roller coaster; roads that disappear into the horizon, slowly pulling distant objects towards me until what was once a speck far off is a mountain that towers above me. There is something amazing about setting out on a road that I cannot see the end of...
