JOBS
About us
Baltimore Bicycle Works is a worker-owned and democratically operated, full-service bicycle shop in the Station North neighborhood of Baltimore, MD. We pride ourselves on our expert repairs, custom bicycle and wheel builds, and bike fit services. We also offer the best selection of new and used bikes, accessories and parts, and high level customer service for all your bike needs.
About the Job
We are looking for a full or part time apprentice to join our crew, and become a worker-owner upon the completion of the apprenticeship program. Apprenticeships are one year for full-time and three years for part-time. As a worker-owned cooperative, each member of the coop is an equal share owner and operator of the business. Therefore, our apprentices learn far more than just fixing and selling bicycles. We teach you to run a business, from scheduling and payroll to ordering products and paying invoices. From the start, you will be at our weekly meetings. You will see behind the curtain, watching and learning how we run a business together. The apprenticeship will teach you many new skills, but also guide you to finding your place in the cooperative, where your personal qualities best fit. We do not need every worker to do every task, but we each must know how every aspect of the business works. We teach our apprentices to be informed and experienced voices when the time comes to speak the direction you wish to see the business go.
When we offer membership at the end of apprenticeship, we do so with the confidence that you are prepared to join us in the responsibility of running a business and being a member of this community.
What we’re looking for
If you love bikes and helping people get to ride them, if you have ever wished you had a real say in the direction of a company, if you have a vision for creating a better bike shop and community, if you just love Baltimore, this could be your place.
Applicants must be comfortable working in a democratic and collaborative environment, able to work on projects both independently and in teams, excited about growing not only our small business, but Baltimore’s bicycle community at large. Weekend availability, and the ability to lift 40 lbs are also requirements. Previous mechanical experience is welcome, but not required. The apprenticeship includes ground up mechanics training. Women, trans people, people of color, and members of other groups traditionally underrepresented in the bicycle industry are encouraged to apply.

This position is designed to prepare workers to become long-term worker-owners of our business, with all the rights and responsibilities that entails.
